California’s historic Mission San Juan Capistrano lights up for Capistrano Lights: Mission in Lights — a 250-year-old courtyard transformed by lighted halos, nativity, Dickens carolers, and ten decorated community trees.

Capistrano Lights: Mission in Lights transforms one of California’s most historic landmarks into a glowing holiday celebration. The Mission — founded in 1776 — fills its iconic central courtyard with community-sponsored decorated Christmas trees, a full-scale nativity, a scented citrus grove, a lighted halo grove, and live Dickens-era carolers.
Each evening begins with a musical tree lighting, followed by holiday programming around the historic adobe walls. Admission to Capistrano Lights typically includes same-day all-day access to the Mission’s daytime grounds, ruins, and the iconic Serra Chapel — plus a multi-language audio tour with seasonal readings (Gospel and the Night Before Christmas).
The event runs across select evenings in mid-to-late December. Confirm this season’s confirmed dates, hours, and ticketing at missionsjc.com.

Yes — the Mission grounds delight kids during the day (peacocks, koi pond, historic gardens), and the evening lighting + nativity + carolers + tree lighting are well-suited to young families.

Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded by Father Junipero Serra on November 1, 1776, as the seventh of California’s 21 Spanish missions and is known as the “Jewel of the Missions.” Its Serra Chapel — the last remaining mission church in which Saint Serra is known to have celebrated Mass — is among the oldest buildings still in use in California. Nearby stand the dramatic stone ruins of the Great Stone Church, toppled by an earthquake in 1812, alongside the original padres’ quarters and gardens that together make up the living outdoor museum on the grounds today.
